Summer Activities

Besides the organized activities, we try to fit in time for work and vacation each summer. I think it’s important for kids to get in the habit of earning a little money and to have some down time.

Our summer is looking to be pretty hectic! In past years, Adam and Zachary have been occupied with baseball from April until August. This year, the boys are still playing baseball, and we’ve added lacrosse for Taylor. In addition to playing baseball, Adam will be an umpire all summer long. Then, Zachary will begin playing football in August. So, we will have a game almost every day, and we’ll be in “summer mode,” where our diet consists mainly of McDonald’s!

Besides the organized activities, we try to fit in time for work and vacation each summer. I think it’s important for kids to get in the habit of earning a little money and to have some down time. So, Adam will be working for his dad full-time this summer. We haven’t planned a vacation yet, but that is always a challenge.

As a family, we’ve been away together lots of times. Fortunately, we’ve never had to find a treatment center. Unfortunately, we have left a lot of bloody towels, washcloths, and sheets at hotels due to Zach’s nosebleeds—not a pretty picture! What happens when the boys want to go away with their friends? Adam has gone to Europe without me, but Zachary isn’t ready to go away alone yet because he is not independent when it comes to infusions. When the time comes though, it will be important for me to meet with the other parents to answer their questions and help them understand how we manage the hemophilia within the regular flow of daily activities.

Before your child begins any physical activity, always consult with a doctor or Hemophilia Treatment Center to make sure the activity is right for him or her.
